Premier League relegation
I can't remember a season that was so tight at the bottom going into February. The bottom goes all the way from 20th to 9th, with just five points separating Everton from the drop zone.

That's 11 teams with a realistic chance of going down.

And things change quickly. A couple of months ago, Palace were dead certs for relegation. A couple of weeks ago, it was Swansea. Now West Brom, Southampton and Stoke occupy the relegation spots. But injuries and a run of good or bad form can soon change that.

How many points will ensure safety? At the moment, the bottom three are averaging just under a point a game. At the same rate, that would mean around 36 points in May. For us, that's another nine points. But will that be enough?

Re: Premier League relegation
36 is a good shout I think. You're right there are 12 teams in spotty form who could feasibly go down - can't remember that ever being the case before. On the other hand it does mean some teams are going to get very few points, so being 4 points off the bottom three is actually quite a strong advantage at this stage.

We need three wins.

The worry is that this run of winnable games comes at a time when half the squad, including most of our attackers are out injured.

I'm sure we will manage to scrape the points from somewhere.

I feel that 38 points will be needed to be reasonably sure this season. Remember we were relegated once with 42, but survived under Zola with only 35; so it can vary considerably!

Re: Premier League relegation
The season we went down with 42 points was because one team got cut adrift at the bottom, can't remember who, don't care. When you get a season like now where it is close mathematically you will not need 40 points to stay up. We should be o.k. but you never know. As someone else pointed out our run of winnable games comes with a decimated squad but with everyone back we should be able to give most teams a game.

40 points will be enough and that is more than achievable. Hopefully we beat Brighton and that makes things alot more comfortable.

we'll be top half of the table by end of the season.

Re: Premier League relegation
There are three teams worse than us unfortunately. A relegation would be the a only thing likely to put pressure on the SPIVS to seriously invest in the team. 35 points will be enough this season. And as less teams can compete at the top end of the table. You will see more owners of middle to lower teams investing less and less. Trying to get by on a shoestring. And pocketing the rest.

Would love to see Stoke. Southampton and Newcastle go. But reckon it will be West Brom. Stoke and Huddersfield.

Makes it interesting for all the smaller clubs.

Indeed it will. Reminds me of the season under Zola when we had 35 points for 17th and we survived by 5 points!

May be as low as 32 points this year, for survival.

It was actually two teams, WBA and Sunderland, who managed 45 points, between them.

With so many teams involved, they can't all pick up points in the matches against each other, unless they are all draws.

Look at the current form table, for the bottom half of the table. No teams, other than Bournemouth and Swansea, have gone 3 matches unbeaten

Never heard of anyone getting turned on by the sight of a league table. Must be the legs.

Re: Premier League relegation

The team in 17th place, has two more points than at the same stage as last season.

This year we have 9 teams, within 5 points of 17th place. Last year it was only 4, at the same stage.

I'm confident the total to avoid relegation will be low. Not confident that we will get them.
